In light of a recent story out of Indianapolis reporting the tragic abandonment of a newborn baby in a workplace trash can, State Senator Randy Head said, “I want to help spread the word about Indiana’s Safe Haven Law, which is dedicated to saving the lives of newborn babies.” He explained, “This law allows a person to give up an infant anonymously without fear of arrest or prosecution.”
According to the law, a responsible adult may give custody of a baby less than 30 days old to any hospital emergency room, police station or fire station in Indiana.
As long as there are no signs of intentional abuse, officials will not require additional information of the person leaving the baby. The Indiana Department of Child Services website states that any knowledge of the date of birth, race, parent medical history or child’s health is appreciated.
Senator head, “I’m hoping the local media will help spread awareness about this important law, which has already helped save the lives of 138 infants who were left with emergency services providers since the law has been in effect.”
