DONALDSON – Amanda Petrucelli, Assistant to the Dean of Academic and Student Services at Ancilla College is a 2014 World Book Night Giver.
World Book Night (WBN) takes place April 23, 2014 which happens to be Shakespeare’s birthday. It is in its third year here in the U.S.; it started in the U.K. in 2011. WBN is a campaign to give away thousands of free, specially-printed paperbacks to light or non-readers. Volunteers, such as Petrucelli, help promote reading in their communities by offering books to those who lacks the means or access to printed books.
In her third year as a giver, this is Petrucelli’s first year at Ancilla College. “Part of Ancilla’s mission is to attract learners who might have trouble at larger institutions or are nontraditional students. I love that the book I’m giving away this year is about armed conflict in the Middle East since we also attract many veterans.”
As a part of World Book Night, 2300 bookstores and libraries serve as community organizers for the book distribution to the volunteer givers. The WBN picks are by a wide array of award-winning and bestselling adult and YA authors, as well as classics, books in Spanish, and books in Large Print. The assortment of titles (39 in total) covers a wide variety of topics and interests.
“The book is a real page-turner, which is intentional. The World Book Night organization believes all it takes is one great book to transform someone into a reader. Sunrise Over Fallujah might be that one book!” Petrucelli said.
