SUGAR GROVE, IL – The Ancilla College women’s basketball team opened their season at the Waubonsee Classic, where they were defeated by Waubonsee Community College and Kennedy-King College.

Friday night, the Chargers faced the Chiefs of WCC, in a back and forth battle that resulted in a 20-20 tie at halftime. The Chiefs’ offense, however, proved to be overpowering in the second half, scoring 43 points and defeating Ancilla with a final score of 63-49. Leading the Charger offense, Hope Wagner shot 60% from the floor and put up nineteen points. Adding to the offensive effort, Taylor Kuhnle and Tiara Bonds each added ten points apiece. Kuhlne led in rebounds and steals for Ancilla with twelve and four respectively.

Charger coach Stephanie Beason commented, “We had a great effort in this game. I was proud of the team being tied at halftime. Late in the second half we didn’t handle their defense very well and allowed them to extend the score.”

The following day, Ancilla took on Division I Kennedy-Long College. Wagner led again in scoring for the Chargers with fifteen points followed by Kuhnle who provided an additional twelve points. Despite their efforts, Ancilla fell short to the Statesmen, losing 60-44.

“We knew Kennedy-King was going to be a tough matchup for us because of their athleticism. We had a great game plan against them, but unfortunately found ourselves in foul trouble early in the first half. Late in the second half we were able to get some momentum and get back on track pinning together some really good plays on both ends,” explained coach Beason.

Beason went on to further state, “Congratulations to Hope [Wagner] and Taylor [Kuhnle], as they received all-tournament team honors for the weekend. I’m proud of the effort the players gave this weekend. We discovered a lot of positive things as well as a few areas to work on. It’ll be exciting to see how things progress throughout the year since we have a really fun group.”
