10/07/13 During the annual meeting of the Community Foundation retiring board members were recognized by Board Chairman Jerry Gates and Vice Chair Patti Kitch. Kay Finley has served on the board for nine years and chaired the Lilly Scholarship Committee for eight. “I’ve gained more than I’ve given,” she commented. Kurt Garner has chaired the Grants Committee for three years and was given credit by Gates for “fine tuning the grants process.”
Nominations were made by Don Thompson, Human Resources Committee Chair. New board members nominated to a full first term expiring in 2016 were David Bailey from the northern tier; Kevin Berger and Scott Joyner from the southern tier.
The final presentation of the evening was also made by Gates in the absence of Mike Overmyer, Asset Development Committee Chair. Gates gave a history of John Marshall and his impact—that of a positive legacy that has affected many generations. Named in his honor, the John Marshall Legacy Society at MCCF provides recognition to those who have informed the Foundation of their decision to leave a planned gift. He highlighted the impact Libby Marshall’s gift of land and property (over $1.1 million in total) will have for the Marshall County Historical Society and the First United Methodist Church of Bourbon. A significant portion of those funds were placed in permanent endowments at MCCF which will provide an annual distribution to each organization. And he highlighted all who have indicated their intent to leave a legacy in a similar manner either through cash, retirement assets, IRAs, securities, real estate or insurance policies. “They understand the power of endowment and know that the assets they leave with the Community Foundation will continue to grow and support good works for generations to come,” he added. The evening’s recipients were Kurt Garner and Jayne Gibson.
