07/30/13 Joined by House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas (OK-3), Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) Monday hosted a roundtable discussion with Hoosier farmers to address important issues facing the agriculture industry. Held by Starke County Farm Bureau President Brad Lawrence at LTL Farms in Knox, Walorski and Lucas provided a legislative update on the farm bill and listened to questions and concerns from members of the Indiana Farm Bureau and local farmers.
“In an effort to continue our grassroots efforts and stay connected with the Hoosier agriculture community, it was a pleasure to welcome Chairman Lucas to Northern Indiana to sit down with local farmers and producers,” said Walorski. “I appreciate his time and leadership as Congress works on the next step to get the farm bill to the President’s desk and support our nation’s economy.”
Indiana is home to over 60,000 farms which cover 14.5 million acres of land and account for 16 percent of the workforce. Farms in the Second District most commonly produce corn for grain and soybeans. During the discussion, Hoosiers reaffirmed the need for a comprehensive farm bill and repeal of overly burdensome EPA regulations.

The House passed a farm bill in June to strengthen crop insurance, provide regulatory relief to small businesses, and enact commonsense reforms to agriculture policy. As the next step toward becoming law, the bill must go to conference between the House and Senate and be sent to the President’s desk.
