06/12/12 Six residents were evacuated Monday morning about 11:15 when city workers hit a gas line on Garro Street.

The Plymouth Sewer Department was working in the street with an excavator to put in a new sewer line in the area of Hoffman Brothers Auto Parts and the Plymouth Farmers’ Market.   City workers were digging a trench when they accidently struck a gas line.

Emergency responders from the Plymouth Fire Department responded to the scene and as a precaution evacuated a couple of residences near the site. The fire crew stayed on site until NIPSCO arrived and stabilized the leak.

NIPSCO was still working in the area after 5 p.m.

Plymouth Fire Chief Rod Miller said the gas line had been marked along the south side of Garro Street between the road and the sidewalk but the feed-line in the street was not marked.
