05/25/12 The community is urged to kick off Memorial Day weekend at the Plymouth Farmers’ Market where Mayor Mark Senter will be distributing U.S. flags. St. Joseph Regional Medical Center will be sponsoring a blood drive; donors are reminded to bring a photo ID. Jan Houin of Operation Comfort will be on hand to give shoppers an opportunity to write a note to our men and women currently serving. The Master Gardeners will have a display on ‘Being Creative with your Landscape’.

‘Bow Wow Friends’ will make their first appearance raising funds for the Plymouth Dog Park. The project was conceived by Gwen Calvert and LuAnn Evans, participants in the 2011-2012 Leadership Marshall County class.   As a result, the first organizational meeting was held in October with Max Hines, Jessica Oliver and Nancy Cox-Lunetta joining the women with the whole hearted support of Mike Hite, park superintendent. ‘The rest is history’ as they say. The cost of a fence, card reader and installation was $18,000 and they’re well on their way to that goal. An anonymous donor offered to match dollar for dollar up to $10,000 and the MCCF granted them $500 for the project. Along with other members of the LMC class, they presented their project at graduation in May. All class members voted for the most worthy project—they won and another $500 was added to the coffers. Very close to their goal, they’ll be at the Market selling ‘people’ as well as ‘pooch’ cookies, handmade dog toys, hand-painted gourd bird houses and a wooden wine rack, books, and potted plants. They have collaborated with the Boys and Girls Club of Marshall County, Catherine Kasper Home and JESSE students for the homemade and handmade items and goodies. For those wanting a permanent memorial at the site, a bone-shaped paver can be purchased for a $200 donation that will grace the entrance to the park,

The first two Saturdays of the Market saw record numbers of crowds and vendors. The Market is held Saturdays from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. in River Park Square at Garro and River Streets, east of Michigan. The last day for the Market is Oct. 13, the second Saturday of the month.

Booth space for vendors remains at $10 per week per booth. Not-for-profit booths are free but limited to once a month.
