04/10/12 One Book/One Town Marshall County will bring a living history event to River Park Square in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh. With this event comes a warning to citizens living in the area that LaPorte Street from Water Street to River Street will be closed during the exhibition. Some firearms will be discharged occasionally during the demonstrations too.
The Civil War Encampment will be in full swing on Friday when a variety of veteran Civil War re-enactors set up camp along the banks of the Yellow River where they will demonstrate a Civil War era way of life, both for soldiers and for those on the home front. The encampment will include men and women who reenact roles from infantry, cavalry, and artillery divisions from the time period. Some of the participants will camp overnight, while others will only be present during the exhibit hours.
The Civil War encampment will be open of Friday, April 13th for school children from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. From 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. the public is invited down to see and talk with the re-enactors. Saturday’s activities are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will be campfires, fire armaments in demonstration, drills, music, food (ham & beans), and scheduled activities on the hour.
Parking for visitors will be in the Farmers’ Market area to the north of the encampment.
