08/02/11 The Marshall County Commissioners were updated on a couple of bridge projects.  Highway superintendent Neal Haeck said a soft area has been found on the west side of the 13th Road Bridge replacement project that will need to be excavated and filled before the new roadbed goes down.

As the Commissioners learned last month, the project is over due for completion.  The project was scheduled to be completed on July 13th.  The contractor requested an extension of 87 days claiming delays in relocation of the utilities, wet weather and flooding this spring.

Haeck said his department will haul away the substandard soil and haul in state certified soil from their pit.  He indicated the need to keep the project moving forward and not having to wait for additional change orders.

The bridge replacement project on Pierce Street will begin next week. Signage is in place and indicates that Pierce Street will be closed beginning on Monday, August 8th.  The street and bridge will be closed for 100 days.  Although construction will continue the contract requires that travel lanes be open on the 101st day.  The contract calls for a final completion date of May 23, 2012.  Northern Indiana Construction is the contractor for the project.
