05/19/11 Ancilla College has hired Walt Pickerell as its new Women’s Volleyball Assistant Coach, the College announced today.

Pickerell is a longtime resident of the local community and brings tremendous experience to the program both as a coach and as a player.

He has coached volleyball for 21 years, including seven years as the head coach and four as an assistant at Plymouth High School.  He has also served as a Junior Olympic/AAU Coach and Director since 1986.

As a player, Pickerell played at Ball State University for four years – three of them on varsity.  He made three separate NCAA Final Four appearances with the Cardinals during his career.

“I am very excited that Walt will be joining the Ancilla family,” said Ancilla head volleyball coach Lana Singleton.  “Walt and I have worked together in the past when I was the head coach at Plymouth High School and I feel we make a great team.  He is very knowledgeable, does a great job of teaching technical skills, and most importantly, he truly loves the game.”

Pickerell holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science – both in Education – and will be retiring from Plymouth High School at the end of the school year.  He has taught the past 12 years at Plymouth.  Prior to that, he spent 25 years at LaVille High School and two years at Whitko.

In addition to his volleyball coaching experience, Pickerell spent 20 years coaching football, eight years coaching wrestling, and one year coaching track and field.

“I appreciate Ancilla College and Lana Singleton for giving me the opportunity to coach at a higher level and having the confidence in my volleyball knowledge and coaching skills,” said Pickerell.

Ancilla College is a Catholic, two-year, co-educational, liberal arts college in Donaldson, Indiana sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ.
