04/14/11 Second and fourth grade students at Webster Elementary in Plymouth raised an impressive $3, 527 and change for St. Jude Children’s Hospital by participating in a Math-a-thon this year. Those wishing to participate were given a fun math book in which to complete a variety of problems. They then asked family and friends for donations for St. Jude’s.
According to Elementary Social Worker and Student Council Sponsor ,Wendi Bendy, the goal was
$1, 800, with each participating classroom raising $300. Bendy said only a handful of kids participated last year, but still raised $500. This year the number of students joining in the project escalated to 57.
Bendy said she encouraged students to keep working by posting updates and recognitions on a bulletin board.
Bendy said, “Two students brought in $250 each and several came in with over $100. She said, “One little girl came in with a bag full of change and asked if the contribution would help.” Bendy said the idea is to involve students at a young age in community projects so that they are aware of needs as they become older.
This is Bendy’s 17th year with the Plymouth Schools and her fifth year at Webster. She also works with students and administrators at Jefferson Elementary.
Bendy said, “I would be more than willing to do a Math-a-thon next year.”
