04/05/11 Over a dozen volunteers gave up their Saturday to help a young Plymouth girl realize her dream.  They were out in force this weekend to help build an addition on to the home of 11-year-old Destiny Cartwright. Destiny is suffering from congestive heart failure and her dream is to have a bedroom of her own.

The Plymouth Kiwanis group learned of Destiny’s wish and began making calls to make it come true.  Keith Woods from the Lowe’s store in Plymouth agreed to volunteer as the general contractor for the project. Woods called on a group of friends who are skilled carpenters and contractors and they started to work early Saturday morning.

Kiwanians provided the labor, while Woods’ crew provided the talent.  They worked in tandem to quickly make the project take shape.  When they showed up for work Saturday morning, all that was there was a foundation for the new addition.  By the time they called it a day on Saturday evening, the walls and roof were in place.  The new addition will add two bedrooms and a bathroom to the small 6th Road home, one bedroom for Destiny and one for her parents so they can be nearby to help her as needed.  Destiny currently shares a 2nd floor bedroom with her two brothers but is no longer able to make it up and down the stairs due to her illness.

The volunteers plan on working on the home every Saturday for the next four or five weeks. Once they finish, the Make A Wish Foundation will completely furnish Destiny’s new bedroom just the way she wants it. Destiny spent part of the day Saturday picking out furniture, carpeting and colors for the walls.

All of the labor and most of the materials for this new addition are being donated. It is estimated that an additional $15,000 is needed to cover what has not been donated.

If you would like to make a cash donation to the project, you can do so by stopping by Lake City Bank (862 E Jefferson, Plymouth) and making your check out to “Kiwanis Destiny’s Wish.” Donations for Destiny’s Wish may also be sent to: Kiwanis-Destiny’s Wish, P.O.
