War on public schoolsThis Thursday, October 30th the Triton Community School Corporation will host a public meeting and PowerPoint presentation to the community titled: “The Challenges of Education in America: The War on Public Schools” at 7 p.m. in the Triton Performing Arts Center.

Triton Superintendent Donna Burroughs said, “The war on public schools will affect all schools in Marshall County.” There is a movement across the country to privatize public schools and Indiana is leading the way according to Burroughs. She said, “It is already having a negative effect on all schools in Marshall County.”

According to news report comparing the U.S. to other countries our students are falling behind but those reports fail to explain that ALL students are tested in the United States while other countries only test select students.

A panel presentation is planned with Superintendent Burroughs, High School Principal Mike Chobanov, Assistant Principal Bob Ross and Triton Elementary Principal Jeremy Riffle. There will be a PowerPoint to follow along and time for the public to ask questions of the panel members.

While the graduation rate increases, the dropout rate has decreased, the number of failing schools is going down and the increase in those who qualify for free & reduces are seen in more schools, they continue to show improvements while school funding continues to get smaller.

Burroughs says there is a push to consolidate school systems to meet a minimum standard. Former Governor Mitch Daniels wanted a minimum of 2,000 students in every school system. Although this measure failed during his term, Burroughs believes it will arise during the next legislative session.

Parents, teachers, administrators and community members from Triton Schools and the surrounding school corporations are being invited to attend the presentation Thursday evening at 7. This presentation will focus on the negative effects of privatizing the public school system in Indiana will have on students and faculty and not be a debate of the pros and cons.

Burroughs said, “If you are a fan of community schools, especially our rural public school in Marshall and the surrounding counties, I urge you to attend this meeting and bring your friends.”
