On Monday, County Attorney Jim Clevenger told the County Commissioners that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has set the public hearing for the proposed Regional Sewer District.
The public hearing will be held on Wednesday, October 19th at 6 p.m. in the Commissioner’s meeting room on the second floor of the County Building.
The purpose of the hearing is to receive comments concerning the proposed regional sewer district.
After conducting a Public Hearing on February 21st the Marshall County Commissioners and County Council submitted a petition to IDEM listing 13 areas in the county that are in need of a regional sewer district due to the homes and businesses being on septic tanks, many of which leak, have failed or will fail. The absence of a public sanitary sewer service has contributed to a public health hazard and environmental contamination in the proposed district.
The areas included in the petition to IDEM are 1.) Lake Latonka, Mill Pond, and Lawrence Lake 2.) East Bremen 3.) North Michigan Area 4.) Rushmoor Addition 5.) Donaldson and Ancilla Domini Convent 6.) McQueen’s Addition Broadview 7.) Golf View Estates 8.) Deer Trail, Tall Oaks, and Carriage Hills 9.) South Michigan Street 10.) Inwood 11.) Burr Oak 12.) Hawk Lake and 13.) State Road 331 South Tippecanoe.
The petition proposes a 7-member District Board of Trustees with 5 members being appointed by the County Commissioners, 1 member would be appointed by the County Council, and 1 member would be appointed by the executive of the City of Plymouth.
Depending on the type of system built in each Priority Service Area, a flat rate would be issued to all users of the system. Preliminary figures were estimated to be between $75 to $85 a month. However, it will be up to the Board of Trustees to make that rate determination.
The public hearing will be conducted by IDEM on Wednesday, October 17th at 6 p.m. in the second-floor meeting room of the County Building.
