On Friday, September 30th, 2022 at approximately 1:00 AM, Officer Wozniak with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department initiated a traffic stop on U.S. 31 in the area of 14th Road on a maroon 2016 Chevrolet passenger car.

During the course of the investigation, a canine officer was requested. Marshall County K9 “Bear” conducted a free-air sniff around the exterior of the vehicle and alerted to the presence of narcotics.  During a search of the vehicle, officers located methamphetamine and marijuana.

The driver of the vehicle, 49-year-old Mitchell H. Smith of Wesson, Mississippi, was taken to the Marshall County Jail and booked in for Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Marijuana.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is merely an allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
