Indiana’s unemployment rate in June stands at 2.4%, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. By comparison, the national unemployment rate in June remains at 3.6%, holding steady from May.
In addition, Indiana’s labor force participation rate rose again, from 62.9% in May to 63.1% in June, remaining above the national rate of 62.2%. Indiana’s total labor force, which includes both Hoosiers employed and those seeking employment, stands at 3,378,333 — an increase of 13,632 from the previous month. This is the highest level since February 2020.
“For the third time in four months, Hoosiers have set a new record for private-sector employment in Indiana,” said DWD Interim Commissioner Josh Richardson. “And, as a sign of Indiana’s strong economic growth, employers still have near record numbers of job openings.”
In Marshall County, the June 2022 unemployment rate was 2.6% ranking us 70th of the 92 counties in the state. In May the rate was 2.1% ranking the county 63rd. Over the past several months the county’s unemployment rate has been 1.6% in April, 2.3% in March, 2.1% in February, and 1.9% in January. Looking further back over the last few years the June Unemployment rates have been 3.4% in 2021, 11.3% in 2020, 3.0% in 2019, and 3.4% in 2018.
Looking at the counties surrounding Marshall you will find LaPorte County at number 4 on the list of counties with an unemployment rate of 4.0 an increase from the 3.2 they had in May. Starke County is 11th on the list of counties with a rate of 3.7 an increase of nearly a full point from their May rate of 2.9%. St. Joseph County now sits at 18th with a rate of 3.5%. Last month they were at 2.7%. Fulton County is 35th on the list of counties with a rate of 3.1 they also had an increase in their unemployment rate from May when it was 2.4%. Pulaski County is 61st on the list of counties with a June unemployment rate of 2.7%. In May their rate was 2.2%. Wrapping up the counties surrounding Marshall is Kosciusko County which is 79th with a rate of 2.5%, a half a point increase from their May rate of 2.0%, and rounding out the list of counties is Elkhart which is 86th with a rate of 2.3% a slight increase from their 1.8% rate in May. Howard County has the highest unemployment rate at 6.5% and Steuben County has the lowest at 2.2%.Private sector employment in Indiana increased by 5,000 jobs over the last month, translating to a gain of 108,300 jobs from this time last year. Total private employment now stands at 2,765,700. Industries that experienced job increases in June included:
· Leisure and Hospitality (+6,700);
· Financial Activities (+500); and
· Manufacturing (+100).
As of July 18, 2022, there were 156,813 open job postings throughout the state. The number of people in Indiana that received unemployment benefits during June was 14,757.
