U.S. Representative Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.), a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, today exposed the true cost of radical big-government intervention and skyrocketing inflation for Indiana’s women and working families. During a Ways and Means Committee hearing on the so-called “burnout epidemic” among working women, Congresswoman Walorski highlighted solutions she has offered to address the kitchen table issues – such as climbing gas prices, paid time off, and child care – for women and families, saying:
“Women and families in my district need gas prices to get under control. They need prices to stop climbing. While inflation runs at a new 40-year high and economists predict a recession on the horizon, Democrats are accusing Republicans of ‘blocking’ policies to help working women.
“Last year, Committee Republicans offered to work with Democrats and provided a commonsense alternative with flexible options for families in the Protecting Worker Paychecks and Family Choice Act. Yet, instead of working with Republicans, Democrats chose a partisan, go-it-alone approach that has made life harder for working women. Members of this Committee have an opportunity to work together to make it easier to balance the competing demands of work and family.”
Congresswoman Walorski shared the firsthand experiences of women leaders who are facing the consequences of inflation, workforce shortages, and supply chain bottlenecks every day.
On Jill Houin, a Hoosier dairy farmer and entrepreneur from Marshall County:
“At home in Indiana, Jill Houin helps run a 4,800-cow dairy farm operation and owns a restaurant in Marshall County. Jill is a creative and hardworking Hoosier who is leading example of the innovation happening at dairy farms across Indiana. The biggest challenges for Jill’s family farm and restaurant are out-of-control inflation, labor shortages, climbing energy costs, and supply chain disruptions directly impacting her business.”
On Carol McDowell, a Hoosier CEO from Elkhart:
“I recently talked to another strong Hoosier woman, Carol McDowell, who leads a family-owned metal finishing company in Elkhart, Indiana. As she told me, their delivery costs have soared from 300 to 400 percent with the rising prices of diesel and gas. This CEO went on to tell me that increasing regulations have made it even more difficult to deal with skyrocketing inflation. As she said, it is frustrating that their company makes products the cleanest way possible – all while the U.S. cripples itself with overly burdensome regulations.”
Congresswoman Walorski, who serves as the top Republican on the Worker and Family Support Subcommittee, has led commonsense alternatives to expand access to affordable child care and paid leave for families. The Protecting Worker Paychecks and Family Choice Act would increase access to paid family and medical leave as well as affordable child care, while rejecting Democrats’ partisan approach that would make it harder for workers to access the paid leave and child care they need.
