As the No Surprises Act takes effect, U.S. Representative Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) released the following statement on her efforts to protect Hoosiers and Americans across the country from surprise medical bills.
“Too many families in Indiana and across the country have been hit by costly and unexpected medical bills in some of their most stressful times of need. Hardworking Americans who do everything right in both emergency and non-emergency situations shouldn’t find a financially devastating medical bill in their mailbox,” said Congresswoman Walorski. “The No Surprises Act takes American patients out of the middle of billing disputes between health care providers and insurers, protecting families from unexpected out-of-network costs. I am thrilled that our bipartisan legislation was signed into law by President Trump and is now delivering results for Hoosiers.”
In the past, surprise medical billing often occurred when patients received care at in-network facilities and then got unexpected bills from out-of-network providers through no fault of their own. The No Surprises Act created strong new consumer protections and established a fair payment resolution process between insurers and health care providers.
The No Surprises Act, as part of H.R. 133, was signed into law in late 2020 and took effect on January 1, 2022. Additionally, Congresswoman Walorski was an original co-sponsor of H.R. 5826, the Consumer Protections Against Surprise Medical Bills Act of 2020, in the 116th Congress.
