National Good Neighbor Day will be observed on Tuesday, Sept. 28. President Jimmy Carter issued a presidential proclamation in 1978 a week after talks at Camp David helped produce a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.
“We are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. Understanding, love and respect build cohesive families and communities,” President Carter said in the proclamation.
The One Book, One City (OBOC) group wants everyone to remember that on Saturday, Sept. 25.
The group’s book this year is Melody Warnick’s “This is Where You Belong.” The book is centered around learning to love where you live by participating in events and activities, learning more about the organizations and politicians in your community, and knowing more about your neighbors.
The ReConnect at River Park Square will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. right after the Farmer’s Market. It was originally delayed in June due to rainy weather.
There will be live entertainment, kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu displays, games for the family, pumpkin art with Anna from the Heartland Artists Gallery, chili cook off, and more.
The Chili Cook Off will be a battle between the not—for-profits. There will be multiple not-for-profits with chilis that they have made. Taste testers can make a freewill donation to the not-for-profit that has, in the tester’s opinion, the best chili. Even though the winner will be the not-for-profit that has the most donations, all will benefit.
