During the House Ways and Means Committee markup on the Democrats’ $3.5 trillion tax and spend spree, U.S. Representative Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) spoke out against the Democrats’ obstruction of Hyde Amendment protections on this massive spending bill.  Since 1976, the Hyde Amendment has banned taxpayer funding for elective abortion, saving lives and safeguarding Americans’ conscience rights.

“I believe in the American dream and in every American’s ability to achieve it. That’s why House Republicans have been united in our efforts to protect the unborn and prevent taxpayer funding for abortion,” said Congresswoman Walorski. “A majority of Americans — nearly 60 percent — agree that tax dollars should not be used to fund elective abortions…In this committee, we should acknowledge the stark reality that there is a broad consensus that taxpayer dollars should not fund abortion.”

Late last night, committee Democrats unanimously rejected Rep. Kevin Brady’s amendment to restore Hyde Amendment protections to Obamacare subsidies included in the legislation, which would ensure that taxpayer dollars would not be used to fund elective abortion services.

BACKGROUND

As a strong pro-life leader in Congress, Rep. Walorski has been leading the fight to save the Hyde Amendment and defend the sanctity of human life.

In February 2021, Rep. Walorski introduced an amendment to restore Hyde protections to the previous budget reconciliation package. Unfortunately, Ways and Means Committee Democrats again rejected her amendment on a party line vote.

Since 1976, the Hyde Amendment has saved more than 2 million lives. For nearly half a century, this provision has maintained widespread bipartisan support.
