Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger reminded the commissioners at last week’s meeting that redistricting will need to be completed by the end of the year.
Redistricting is the process by which new congressional and state legislative district boundaries are drawn including those for County Commissioner and County Council. District lines are redrawn every 10 years following completion of the United States census. The federal government stipulates that districts must have nearly equal populations and must not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity.
The Marshall County Election Board should conduct a study of the new population numbers from the census and determine if new district lines need to be drawn to keep the districts as equal as possible.
The Marshall County Commissioners will need to review information provided by the Election Board and approve an ordinance establishing commissioner and council districts within the county.
