County news # 2At the close of the Commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday, Commission President Kevin Overmyer took time to make a statement pertaining to House Bill 1311.

In December the County Council, by a 7 – 0 vote and the County Commissioner by a 2 – 1 vote, passed a resolution in support of House Bill 1311.  Commissioner Stan Klotz voted in opposition.

House Bill 1311 authored by Representative Jack Jordan provides that money accumulated from the Marshall County additional tax rate for criminal justice facilities, after the tax imposed is terminated, shall be transferred to the county jail fund to be established by the county treasurer (rather than to the county highway fund under current law).

Overmyer said, “I learned that there are some new council members that have gone behind out backs and have contacted legislators down there to get that bill killed.  Now, if they have a problem with that, they should come to the commissioners and ask them or ask their own body to take a vote and not go behind anybody’s back.”   Overmyer said he has received several calls about their action to try and stop the bill.  He went on to say, “You talk about transparency.  You know, if you want something done come to this board of go to the County Council and bring it up for discussion.  I don’t think going behind both bodies backs is it.”

With that statement he asked if there was any other business for the commissioners.  With one speaking, the meeting was adjourned.
