Mother Nature gave the Plymouth Speedway a break from the rain long enough Saturday night to get in some close racing action. Four classes battled it out on the fast clay track with three of them racing for an expanded purse.
The track was a dry slick track with an inviting cushion on top that attracted many racers to the top with some success. Several of the racers mentioned the track conditions were much to their liking.
One of the drivers that made the top cushion look easy was the Modified feature winner Derek Losh. Losh took five laps to move into the lead of the 25 lap feature and begin putting drivers a lap down on lap eleven.
Matt Mitchell started on the pole of the feature and raced in the top five most of the feature until Frank Marshall got by him in the closing laps. Marshall started in fourth but dropped on the opening laps to eleventh but gathered it back up finishing fifth behind Dylan Woodling who started ninth but charged to the front finishing in fourth. Zeke McKenzie would take second and Ryan Cripe finished third from his seventh starting spot.
The Mods will be back up this Saturday night along with CSR Sprints, Non-Wing 600s and Super Streets.
Super Streets had a stout field of entries as there was some extra cash on the line for the winner. They had three heat races with John Rhoads, David Hurst and Calvin Peek Jr. picking up wins.
The feature started 19 cars and featured previous class winners sprinkled throughout the field. Joe Spiewak would lead from the pole to the checkers picking up his first feature win this year. But the rest of the field was swapping places every lap. David Short started fifth and finished in second several car lengths back. The big mover of the race was Travis Wolford in third from his tenth place start. Ron Wilkes, Bob McLean and Shaun Wiltjer rounded out the top six trading places and paint most of the race. This hotly contested class will return Saturday June 1. Currently Wilkes leads the points by a slim margin over Wiltjer and Spiewak, look for this points race to go down to the wire.
The CSR Sprints where on the bill and John Gurley in the 3G raced last year’s points champion Eric Saunders hard in Saunders return. Gurley was able to get a comfortable lead only to have a yellow bunch the field back up. Gurley’s car lost a step after the yellow flag and was unable to hold off Saunders for the win. Jack James grabbed the final step on the podium.
The final race of the night was an exciting Street Stock race that found Lee Hall getting his second win of the season and taking over the points lead. Hall would start in the 7 spot with second place finisher Jacob Kolwyck starting on the pole. RJ Akers was able get a third place finish from his sixth place starting spot. Shane Sanders just missed a podium spot after racing in the top three spots most of the race.
Mark your calendars for Jun 8 as the Great Lakes Super Sprints make their first appearance of the season at the “Playground of Power.” These 360 Winged Sprints feature some familiar names on this traveling circuit. Plymouth’s own Zane Devault is currently fourth in points with one top 5 finish to go with two top tens in six feature appearances.
Two additional former CSR Sprint drivers Garrett Saunders and Micheal Summers will also be in attendance.
Sharing the track that night with the GLSS will be the UMP Mods, Non-Wing 600s and Street Stocks. Tickets will be $20, with kids 6 – 12 years old $10 and our littlest race fans 5 and under free. Hot Laps will start at 6 p.m. with the racing action getting underway at 7 p.m.
