Big Tree ResigtryThe Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry publishes the Big Tree Register, a list of the largest known specimen of each native tree species in the state. The register is published every five years.

The Marshall County Wythougan Valley Preservation Council has decided to undertake the creation of a “Big Tree” register here in the county.  They are asking citizens to look around their yard, farms, and forested area for native trees that may have been here for many many years.

While the state registry requires three measurements: the trunk’s circumference, in inches, at 4 1/2 feet above the ground; the total height, in feet; and the average crown spread, in feet. The total size of a tree is then calculated using the formula:  circumference + height + 1/4 average crown spread.

The special Wythougan Tree Committee is willing to come out and measure the large trees for citizens.  They also plan to create a countywide registry for the “Big Trees” in Marshall County that are some of the largest for their species.

If you would like to nominate a tree for the Wythougan Valley Preservation Council’s Big Tree registry contact Mark Gidley at at 574-780-0889.
