Diabetes Alert Day 2017

Saint Joseph Wound Healing Centerin Plymouth would like to remind everyone that March 28 is Diabetes Alert Day, as recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

Diabetes Alert Day represents an important reminder for everyone to assess their possible risk for type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin. This results in unhealthy blood sugar levels, leading to a variety of medical complications. Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include heredity, age, diet, inactivity, sedentary lifestyle and obesity.

“An estimated 29.1 million people in the U.S. have diabetes,” said Dr. Craig Miller, medical director of the Plymouth Wound Healing Center. “Of those 29.1 million, nearly 28 percent are undiagnosed. Diabetes Alert Day helps shed light on this national epidemic.”

Saint Joseph Health System recommends that everyone take the Diabetes Risk Test, which was developed by the American Diabetes Association. This test evaluates common risk factors and creates an unofficial score to help you determine your level of risk for type 2 diabetes. To take the Diabetes Risk Test, visit diabetes.org/alert.

For more information, education or available classes about diabetes and its risk factors, talk to your family doctor or healthcare provider.
