South Bend, IN – – – Ancilla College got a dominate first half performance for 11 goals that provided enough spark as they held on to defeat the Ball State Cardinals 16 – 12 at the Kroc Center in South Bend.
The Chargers got balanced scoring from their attackmen Blake Alexander and Cole Reuben as they each netted four goals apiece. Anthony Vercelli also had four goals and four assists to help the Chargers move to 3-3 on the year.
Alexander and Reuben each had a hat trick in the first quarter as the Chargers were up 6-1 after the first quarter. Ancilla put up five more goals in the second en route to a 11-2 halftime advantage.
“It was a tale of two halfs for us as we came out firing on all cylinders in the first, but we let our emotions and Ball State get the better of us in the second half, said Head Coach Brian Welch. “We still haven’t put together a complete 60 minute game, and that’s one reason why we let Ball State creep back into this game today. I’m proud of the way my guys handled being a man down most of the second half and playing shorthanded with some key guys out. Cameron Healy, Stevie Nelson and Desmond Knowles all stepped up for us today in playing roles that they have not played or practiced at all this season. Our team motto is Count on Me, and these players exemplified this meaning to its exact core and am happy to walk away with the win.”
Jessee Holt (1 goal, 1 assist), Elijah McMahon (1 goal), Zach Schultz (1 goal), and Knowles (1 goal) rounded out the scoring for the Chargers. Schultz was tremendous once again at the faceoff x winning 80% of his draws, while Goalie Zayne Hartz had a solid day in front of the net with 14 saves.
