The Helping Hands, an anti-bullying/peer mentoring program at Triton Jr./Sr. High School recently took 17 new recruited students along with 6 veteran students that were experienced peer leaders to a camp at Koinonia Environmental Center in Pierceton, for a 2 1/2 day training camp.
The camp taught the students how to be effective peer leaders and how to handle bullying situations. The students were taught different listening and helping techniques through specially designed learning activities. By taking the students away from the school environment, they were able to take off their masks of how they are at school and be who they really are.
The new recruits were chosen by an application and interviewing process. The 33 current members of Helping Hands voted for 4 to 5 of the members to serve on a panel and that panel read the applications and held interviews. The applicants were then rated by the panel and chosen. This is a diverse group of students from all different backgrounds and interests. These trained students will now assist with any student conflicts at the school and help stop bullying situations.
Members of the Helping Hands are: Crystal Brown, Breanna Campbell, Izabella Cretcher Shaun Honeycutt, Jade Kieninger, Josh Taylor, Delaynie Albright, Sadie Barber, Alexis Chancey, Hadassah Chupp, Caleb Felton, Caitlyn Ihnen, Meghan Lindsey, Tayla Lynd, Angela Riffey, Nevaeh Sauer, William Schaetzle, D’Angelo Shumpert, Melissa Slabaugh, Mercedes Springer, William Weissert, Sarah Weber, and Breylon Wareham. These students learned skills that will help them throughout their lives to maintain positive relationships.
