PLYMOUTH, IN – On Thursday night, the Charger volleyball team had an exciting win over pre-season ranked #16 Grand Rapids Community College, 3-1.

Ancilla came back with fighting spirits defeating Grand Rapids 25-27, 25-23, 29-27, 25-19, after facing a devastating defeat against Lake Michigan College earlier in the week, improving their record to 8-5 and making school history. This match marks the first time since 2007 (October, 23rd) that the Chargers have had a set win over the Raiders as well the first time since 2005 (September 29th) that they have had a match win over Grand Rapids. To continue the history setting for the evening, Thursdays match, would go down as only the 3rd match won in school history against Grand Rapids and only the 2nd best 3-of-5 match win ever over the Raiders. The current Ancilla College Volleyball overall record versus Grand Rapids is now 3-22.

Several newcomers to the Charger program played outstanding volleyball including Jackie Friel who handed out 41 assists, had three blocks, went perfect in serving, and had 28 digs. Natalee Walters who played libero, had 28 digs and was 36 for 38 in serve receive and also served up three aces. Freshman Jill Brown had one of her best games to date with 15 kills, three aces, 22 digs and was perfect in serve receive going 21 for 21. Sophia Smith had 10 kills and three blocks and Maddie Price dug up 17 balls. Middles Samantha Brenneman and Samantha Albers contributed 10 and 7 kills respectively. Albers also had three block assists.

Coach Singleton praised the efforts of her program, “We had several newcomers with outstanding performances tonight. However, it is also important to note that this was an outstanding team effort and took the whole team to win. By no means did one or two people accomplish this feat, it was a total team effort. I am very proud of them for going hard, not giving up and playing team volleyball.”

The Lady chargers are back at home on Saturday against #20 ranked Schoolcraft in a double header. Game one starts at 1:00p.m.
