LongtimeABC57 (WBND) anchor and award-winning journalist Brian Conybeare will appear on the Friday, February 16, 2024 episode of ABC’s 20/20 at 9:00 P.M. (ET) as it re-examines a Michigan love triangle that tragically resulted in the murder of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III. Conybeare first investigated the murder in an ABC57 News’ 30-minute special titled, “Love. Honor. Betrayal.,”  which earned an Emmy Award from the Chicago Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Ultimately, Hassel’s wife and her lover were both convicted in the case.

Brian Conybeare joined the ABC57 News team as a main anchor in January 2018 and his reporting has already had an impact on Michiana. Brian spurred police in St. Joseph, Michigan, to reopen the 1991 “accidental drowning” case involving 16-year-old Eric McGinnis of Benton Harbor.  A witness came forward to ABC57 News after Brian’s special series “The River” investigated the deaths of six black men, whose bodies were found in the water separating the two communities and helped the Michigan Attorney General’s Cold Case Squad determine Eric’s death was, in fact, a murder not an accident. In 2023, Brian’s continuing coverage of the case won a National Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Prior to joining ABC57, Brian worked as a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor at CBS 2 News in New York City. During his time there, Brian did extensive reporting on the terror attacks in New York, the 2016 presidential campaign, consumer scams and took viewers on exclusive tours inside a troubled (and now-closed) nuclear power plant and New York’s budding medical marijuana industry.
