An Elkhart man is sitting in the Marshall County Jail on a $10,000 cash bond for Burglary, Theft, and Criminal Mischief.

On Monday, August 28, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department obtained a criminal report from Ken Houin, owner of Castle Storage at the intersection of State Road 17 and State Road 8 north of Culver.  Houin reported that an unknown person had broken into a storage unit and stolen items.

Deputy Hafke responded and took the report and continued with the criminal investigation. It was believed that the suspect was Richard Imel, 57, from the Elkhart area.

The investigation was then turned over to the Detective Division and a report was completed and sent to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

An arrest warrant was obtained for the arrest of Richard Imal and on Thursday, September 21, Detective Sergeant Bryant along with Lt. Detective Les McFarland went to Elkhart and located Richard Imel. He was arrested, transported to the Marshall County Jail, and booked in for Burglary as a Level 5 Felony, Theft as a Level 6 Felony, and Criminal Mischief as a misdemeanor.  He is being held on a $10,000 cash bond.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is merely an allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial by jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
