“Every Step Brings Hope” is the theme of this year’s Relay for Life event in Marshall County. Scheduled for Saturday, September 9 from 5 to 10 p.m. in River Park Square, the Relay for Life honors those who have passed, supports those who are battling cancer, and celebrates those who survived.
Everyone in the entire county is encouraged to come for just an hour or two or stay for the entire event. Opening ceremonies begin at 5 with the raising of the flags by the Boy Scouts and vocalist Kim Morrison. The first lap of the Relay is the Survivor Lap followed by the Caregiver Lap and then everyone joins in the walk to fight against cancer.
During the evening there are opportunities for those not on a team to participate and help to raise funds to fight against cancer. From 5:30 until 8 there’s a silent auction with some fantastic items to bid on. They will also be collecting canned food to be donated to the Bread of Life Food Pantry. The concession stand in River Park Square will be open with snacks and hot dogs along with drinks and Woody the DJ will provide music throughout the evening.
Beginning at 8:30 the Luminary Ceremony begins. This after-dark time honors every life touched by cancer. They can be dedicated to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who’s overcome cancer. When you attend the Marshall County Relay for Live event on September 9th you can purchase luminaries at the registration table. You can decorate your luminary or there will be some already decorated for your use. When you donate for a Luminaria it helps fund the American Cancer Society’s mission to help save lives.
Following the luminary ceremony, the Relay team will announce the winners of the silent auction and at 9:45 they will have closing ceremonies.
