Last Thursday the Marshall County Council unanimously voted to deny the County Commissioners’ request for an additional appropriation from the Rainy-Day Fund to fund the Small Structure Inventory Project.
In April the Commissioners submitted the same $200,000 request to use money from the Rainy-Day Fund to pay for the Small Structure Inventory following a flooding issue that impacted the county’s drainage system. The Council sent the request back to the commissioners at their April meeting for reconsideration. The commissioners looked at the request a second time and voted 3-0 to send the additional appropriation request from the Rainy-Day Fund back to the County Council a second time.
County Councilman Tim Harman asked to pull the commissioner’s additional appropriation request out of the consent agenda for a separate discussion and consideration. Harman said his preference is to use the Cum Bridge Fund to pay for this project. He said, “I still stand by my position a month ago. The Cum Bridge Fund has an adequate balance to cover this at least for a few years. I don’t think we are at the point where we need to dip into Rainy Day. I’d rather use the dedicated fund of the Cum Bridge. That’s my reasoning.”
The County Council voted 6 to 0 to deny the commissioner’s additional appropriation request from the Rainy-Day Fund with member Will Patterson absent from the meeting.
The commissioners will consider an alternate funding source for the Small Structure Inventory during their meeting Monday. They will then have to seek an additional appropriation from the County Council at their June meeting.
