As Marshall Starke County Special Olympics has begun the process of restarting its program, their main focus has remained steady:  to recruit as many athletes as possible.  They have reached out and visited with local schools, the mayor, adult services organizations, newspapers, radio stations, and more.  They are trying to get their name out in the community as much as possible. Their very first, and current program is basketball!  Their goal for the basketball program was to have an adult team and a youth team.  Marshall Starke County Special Olympics is excited to announce they have submitted the required paperwork with Special Olympics Indiana to have both!!!  There are a total of 17 athletes signed up for the Basketball program!

Special Olympics basketball runs much like High School basketball.  The Wildcats (adult team) will have regular games and then go to sectionals.  If they win at sectionals, they will advance to the state competition which will be held at the Pacers Athletic Complex in Westfield, Indiana the first weekend in April.  The Firecats (youth team) will have regular games; however, there will not be sectionals for the youth team, and they will automatically advance to state and play on March 25th at the University of Indianapolis.

Each team has a Head Coach and an Assistant Coach.  The coaching positions are volunteer.  All their practices are held in Culver.  Marshall Starke Special Olympics would like to give a huge shout-out to Culver Community Schools for allowing them to use their facilities for practice!  In their news release, they say, “We have been so extremely grateful for the amount of support we have received thus far from the athletes, volunteers, families, schools, and our local communities!  Thank you!”
