PLYMOUTH — The high school girls track sectional at Plymouth held true to form for the most part. Favorites Culver Girls Academy and Plymouth finished 1-2, well ahead of third place Manchester as expected. The top three finishers in each event move on to the Warsaw Regional next Tuesday.
Plymouth led after five scored events, but it was CGA from then on.
Highlights for the Lady Eagles were Cecille Figueroa winning the 100 and 200, Marissa Rivera winning the 800 and taking second in the 1600, Erin Anderson and Maggie Bialek going 1-2 in the 400 and Bialek placing second in the pole vault. CGA’s 4×800 relay team won the first event of the night as well.
“You never know what is going to happen, but the girls did a nice job,” said CGA head coach Mike Chastain. “Cecille is a just freshman, but had a great night. Marissa has a foot problem so we’ll scratch her (in regionals) in the 1600. The 800 is her best race. (She finished 9thin the state last year.) I’m pleased with the girls. They’ve had a good season and we look forward to moving on.”
Plymouth highlights included Cece Robinson winning the discus and shot put, a 1-2 finish in the high jump by Sara Hunter and Claudia Marohn respectively, Kaitlyn Carothers taking second in the 800 and Nicole Keller the same spot in the 200, Kacee Peters placing second in the 300 hurdles, and Julia Marohn taking second in the long jump and third in the 110 hurdles.
“That was good,” said Plymouth head coach Jeff Kindelan. “I’m pretty confident Cece’s going to go to state and that was the first time all season that Sara has gone higher than Claudia in the high jump.”
The one downer for the Lady Pilgrims’ night was the end of the 4×100 relay. Coming down the home stretch, Plymouth’s anchor runner fell and ended up in Bremen’s lane, disqualifying the PHS relay team.
“Just bad luck,” Kindelan said of the unfortunate ending of the relay race. “We were seeded first. I’m not going to say it cost us the meet, but it was the end of us being competitive to win the meet.”
Since the fall slowed down the Lady Lions’ anchor leg, Bremen did a rerun – 30 minutes after the meet had finished and with most of the teams in the parking lot. Under the unusual circumstances of running alone, the Lady Lions’ quartet ran the relay better than their first time, but came up just short of advancing to regionals by placing fourth.
Raven White had quite a night for Bremen, winning the pole vault and taking third in the 200. Her teammate Rachel Hall had two thirds (800, 1600) and moves on in those two events.
Triton’s Abigail Powell took first in both hurdle races and teammate Makenna May advances in the pole vault with a third place finish.
