Members of the Plymouth Common Council took the first step in the tax abatement process for Pretzels Inc. during their meeting Monday.
Pretzels Inc. is purchasing the Commerce Building on Pioneer Drive and will establish a hard pretzel and corn based snack operation complementing their corporate operations in Bluffton.
Co-owners Steve Huggins and Chip Mann appeared before the City Council saying the company has been in business for 37 years and is owned by two
families. The move to Plymouth comes following a fire in early June at their leased plant in Pennsylvania.
Wanting to move closer to their flour supplier and the corporate office they looked for locations within 2 hours of Bluffton and Plymouth was the best choice according to their consulting firm. Incentives from the state and city also helped in the selection process.
The company will invest approximately $15 million dollar in a 2 year plan an project hiring 40 people in the first year with an additional 25 in the 2nd or 3rd year. They anticipate production by the end of the first quarter of 2017.
Their products are packaged as Harvest Road and found locally at Aldies. They also do private labeling.
The City Council unanimously approved the resolution declaring the property to be within an Economic Revitalization Area. The council will take the second step at their next meeting on September 26th.
