08/22/13 A call-out meeting for the “Green Team” for the Blueberry Festival will be held on Wednesday, August 28th at 6 p.m. in the festival office located next to the Coffee Lodge on East Jefferson Street in Plymouth.
Marianne Peters headed up the first efforts to recycle trash from the Marshall County Blueberry Festival in 2008. That first year they were able to keep 3 tons of material out of the landfill. Since that time she and her team have worked the festival educating visitors on the use of the recycling containers located throughout the park. The last couple of years recycling collections have pretty well stabilized at 7 tons while trash gathered up during the 4 day festival is between 30 and 32 tons.
There are more than 700 trash cans around the festival grounds and approximately 200 recycling containers thanks to a donation this year from Coca Cola Bottling in Plymouth for 20 new bins.
Peters has some new partners on board with the Green Team this year, Republic Services, CJ Polly and Mil-tek. Mil-tek will have an air-powered baler near the park office to show the high-tech equipment they have available to assist companies in their on-site recycling needs. Peters said Marshall County Solid Waste is a huge partner with the Green Team along with PNC Bank and of course the festival’s sanitation crew.
This year the “Green Team” display near Blueberry Information Booth #1 near Jefferson School will focus on plastics with displays of different types of plastics that can be recycled and how to us plastics responsibility.
