03/09/10 Plymouth Police Officer Jason Dobbins responded to Grace Baptist Church at 1830 North Michigan Street Sunday evening at 5:42 for a male subject who had told the minister’s wife he had dynamite in a box.
47 year old Larry E. Konkle of Skylane Drive was arrested Sunday night on preliminary charges of false reporting, intimidation, attempted arson, and attempted criminal mischief. He was held with no bond in the Marshall County Jail.
Officer Dobbins said that Mr. Konkle had taken a knife to the morning service at the church and told the pastor that the Nazis, Plymouth Police and Bowen Center were after him and the knife was his protection.
When attending the Sunday evening service he told the pastor’s wife that he had dynamite in the box he was carrying as they walked across the parking lot. When she went to call for assistance Konkle hid the box inside the church.
Police arrived and located the suspect. Officer Dobbins has had a number of dealings with Mr. Konkle and was familiar with the issues he has. After speaking with him the suspicious box was located near a copy machine in the church. Once it was determined that items in the box were not dangerous Officer Dobbins opened it and found various items including crayon and maker drawings, a greeting card and candy.
Monday afternoon formal charges were filed against Larry Konkle including count 1 manufacture of hoax device a class D felony, count 2 intimidation a class A misdemeanor, and count 3 false information a class B misdemeanor.
