11/10/09 The suggestion of moving the Marshall County Council meetings from the second Monday morning at 9 a.m. of each month to an evening time slot was again discussed at their November meeting.
The idea of getting more citizens to participate in county government was why Ryan Ripley asked the Council to consider moving their meetings to an evening allowing the opportunity for many more citizens to attend. Monday morning Ripley said, “About 85% of the county’s tax payers are working at 9 a.m.”
After last months discussion Council members waited to hear from concerned constituents, but that didn’t happen.
Judith Stone said she only had one constituent contact her and it was Mr. Ripley.
Council President Matt Hassel said the only comment he had received was concern whether the media might not be able to attend the meeting if the time was changed to evening. (City Council meets at 6 p.m. the second Monday)
The other five council members said no one had approached them on the suggestion.
The motion was made to remain at the same time, 9 a.m. on the second Monday of each month. The vote was 5 in favor and 2 against. Jude Stone voted against because on the one person who contacted her and Council member Ralph Booker voted against saying he agreed with the notion that the majority of citizens are working at 9 a.m. He did say he didn’t believe many of those citizens would attend but that they would have the opportunity to if interested.
Note: Ryan Ripley has announced his intentions to seek the Democratic Party nomination for the District 4 seat, currently held by Mrs. Stone in next year’s election.
